French director André Engel sets the action near a small station on a local railway line. The forester falls in love with a female fox he has captured, and from that point on, the world around him descends into chaos. The animals living in the village are anthropomorphized while retaining their outward appearances, creating a mysterious world where it is unclear whether one is in the animal realm or the human realm. This “Fox” is a compelling production where this unique atmosphere, the wonderfully stylish costumes, and the vivid, quintessentially French colors that enliven the stage come together masterfully. The cast is exceptionally strong, featuring Tsaragova as the fox—a Russian beauty who looks like a model—and Rajilainen as the dignified forester, a familiar face even in Japan.
