Description:
The film *Coral of the Finale* tells the story behind Stravinsky’s *Symphony for Wind Instruments*, composed in 1920 in memory of Debussy. Using the “montage” technique for the first time and interspersing short fragments of sound and clusters of sound, Stravinsky composed a bold and magnificent work featuring complex tempo changes. Even today, the originality of this work continues to move musicologists, musicians, and audiences alike. The choral section in the finale can be described as the pinnacle of eclecticism. By basing the film’s style and editing on the structure and characteristics of the “Symphony,” Director Schäfer has created a moving documentary that introduces this adventurous, neoclassical musical work. The film features narration by the director himself—including interviews—along with archival materials on Stravinsky and a performance by the Dutch Wind Ensemble conducted by De Leeuw. Composed in 1909, “Five Orchestral Pieces” is one of Schoenberg’s most famous works and marked a revolutionary leap from tonal to atonal music. In Schoenberg’s own words, this work is “neither a structure of sound nor something constructed from sound, but merely a ceaseless flow of timbre, rhythm, and pitch.” This recording features rehearsals and a performance of Schoenberg’s “Five Orchestral Pieces” by the Netherlands Radio Orchestra, conducted by Gielen. Between each movement, interview footage is interspersed in which Gielen, Karl Schosky, and Charles Rosen discuss various aspects of Schoenberg’s life and work. Rosen also performs the final movement of Schoenberg’s “Three Piano Pieces,” Op. 11, on the piano.
