Formed in New York in 1995, the Sejong Soloists consist of young soloists selected from eight different countries. They have performed concerts throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and have appeared in numerous television documentaries. Artistic Director Hyojin Kang was born in Seoul and raised in the United States. She studied music at the Peabody Institute (reportedly as a struggling student) and later studied under Dorothy DeLay at The Juilliard School, where her talent blossomed. He conceived the Sejong Soloists as “musical ambassadors,” devoting his efforts to nurturing the talents of these young musicians and conducting their musical activities with the constant goal of helping them spread their wings across the globe. Shaham engages in a lively, tense musical exchange with them. In Haydn, we hear an intimate dialogue; in Mendelssohn, a musical exchange that could even be called challenging—such contrasting musical styles come through clearly. This performance showcases Shaham at the height of his artistry, having reached the pinnacle of his maturity. Naxos Japan
