Pretty Yende
Description:
A modern fairytale, and a delightful one at that: Pretty Yende. This is the debut album of the major new soprano newly signed to an exclusive contract with Sony Classical. Born in 1985 in a small town in a remote corner of South Africa, Yende first heard opera at the age of sixteen — the Flower Duet from Delibes's Lakmé, used in a British Airways television commercial. She decided on the spot that she would become an opera singer, and won a scholarship that took her to Cape Town, where she enrolled at the South African College of Music. In 2009 she took first prize in every category at the International Belvedere Competition for opera and operetta, the first time in the competition's history that this had been achieved. That same year she joined the young artists' programme at La Scala, Milan, making her debut there the following year. In 2011 she again swept every category, this time at Plácido Domingo's Operalia competition. In 2013 she stepped in for Nino Machaidze in Le Comte Ory to make her Metropolitan Opera debut opposite Juan Diego Flórez, winning international recognition. She already appears regularly at the opera houses of Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Hamburg as well as at La Scala, and the 2016/17 season brings engagements at the Bavarian State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Paris Opera. Every item on this album marks a milestone in her career — including, of course, the Flower Duet, together with Le Comte Ory (her Met debut), Roméo et Juliette (her Belvedere Competition victory), Beatrice di Tenda (which made such a striking impression at Operalia), Lucia di Lammermoor (her triumphant return to Cape Town) and Il barbiere di Siviglia (her Paris Opera debut this February). All show off her glittering coloratura technique, her intelligent, expressive artistry and her beautiful voice. In 2016 she took part in Carnegie Hall's Lullaby Project, supporting pregnant women and teenage mothers in difficult circumstances. Sony Music
