The Playfords, founded in 2001 and named after the late 17th century English music publisher John Playford (1621-1686), have attracted attention as a group that draws new attractions from Renaissance and early Baroque ballroom music through the use of historical instruments and unprecedented arrangements. The group's authentic and innovative interpretations, which are the result of spontaneous improvisation, have received a great deal of acclaim, and the group has also collaborated with dancers and theater. Playford was the compiler of the best-selling "English Dancing Master," published in 1651. The book was published in 1728 and was expanded to three volumes. The score contained only the melody, leaving the chords and bass notes to the improvisation and taste of the performer.The Playfords are known for their playful approach to music, bringing ancient dance music back to life in the modern age. In this new album, they gently and joyfully convey Luther's ideological beliefs through their secular and folk-like arrangements of the music of Martin Luther, the founder of the Reformation, and the composers of his time.
