This isn’t the first time Sly Stone has proclaimed a “return” with his new album, *I’m Back: Family & Friends*. As history shows, both *Heard Ya Missed Me, Well I’m Back* (1976)—an attempt to reunite his disbanded group—and *Back on the Right Track* (1979), released after he switched labels, ultimately served as precursors to his absence. However, this time around, I’d like to take a positive view of things. Although I casually refer to it as a “new album,” this is the first time his discography has been updated since *Ain’t But The One Way* (1982), released 29 years ago. Following the success of his tribute album, he appeared in public for the first time in about 20 years at the 2006 Grammy Awards, embarked on a tour the following year, and even performed with his old friend George Clinton. Although he reportedly went off the grid for a while even after signing with Cleopatra, considering the long hiatus, isn’t this a whirlwind comeback? The album centers on remakes of his past classics, featuring newly recorded parts by the artist himself alongside performances by an all-star lineup of guests. Led by Ray Manzarek (The Doors), whose iconic organ riffs resonate on “Dance to the Music,” legends such as Jeff Beck, Carmine Appice, Ann Wilson (Heart), Johnny Winter, and Bootsy Collins offer fresh interpretations of these classics. The album also includes three completely new songs—and the sheer uniqueness of the timeline, given that they were written in 1988–89 just before he went into seclusion, is enough to make your head spin.
