BJ4 is an album of paramount importance in the development of jazz-funk and early smooth jazz, symbolizing a more confident, groove-oriented era in Bob James' career. Released in 1977, this album masterfully fused sophisticated jazz harmonies with funk rhythms, laying the foundation for a sound that would profoundly influence jazz fusion and crossover jazz. Compared to his earlier, more experimental or orchestral-leaning works, BJ4 features electric keyboards, steady basslines, and laid-back funk grooves. From the iconic opening track onward, the album showcases James' melodic electric piano and arrangements. This is the first analog release since 1987.
