In 2014, maestro Daniel Barenboim took the podium. This marked his second appearance at the New Year’s Concert, his first in five years since 2009. He is one of the most important conductors for the Vienna Philharmonic and a renowned maestro who currently serves as music director of both the Berlin State Opera and La Scala in Milan. During his debut in 2009, Barenboim’s commitment to a wide range of activities extending beyond the music world—such as his call for world peace in the traditional New Year’s speech—was brought into sharp focus. The program included classics such as “The Blue Danube” and the “Rákóczi March,” as well as pieces making their debut in the history of the New Year’s Concert. The crystal-clear video and audio offer the luxury of vividly experiencing the musical feast unfolding in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, beautifully adorned with an abundance of flowers. Daniel Barenboim is a conductor and pianist born in Argentina in 1942. He made his debut as a child prodigy pianist at the age of seven. Beginning in the 1960s, he shifted his focus to conducting, appearing as a guest conductor with major orchestras around the world. After serving as music director of the Orchestre de Paris and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he is currently the music director of the Berlin State Opera and La Scala in Milan.
