Daniel Bäre is widely regarded as the finest “Mozart tenor” of our time and has recently earned high acclaim for his performances in Baroque and Classical opera, as well as for his work as an evangelist. As an expressive lieder singer, his lyrical voice, precise intonation, and appropriately restrained interpretation make him the ideal choice for these Schubert songs. This album includes both arrangements for piano trio—adapted by tenor Bäre himself—and the original versions with piano accompaniment. The Oliver Schneider Trio cherishes the profound depth of Schubert’s late period—which seems to extend naturally from his piano trios—and their arrangements, which foster a consistent atmosphere, give the impression that the strings express Schubert’s fear of death and the dark, despairing resonance of his heart—emotions that could not be conveyed through the piano alone. The vocal delivery also differs from the original version, where the lyricism flowing consistently throughout the entire work could be fully appreciated through Behm’s beautiful voice. Instead, by allowing the strings to take center stage, the singing seems to profoundly narrate the very words of Wilhelm Müller’s poem, which depicts a figure reflecting negatively and pessimistically on his inner self.
