They have captured the attention of piano enthusiasts not only through the famous repertoire for two pianos but also by unearthing and recording lesser-known works and arrangements. This album, likely the first concerto recording by Thar & Grothuisen for Sony Classical, features Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos as well as Czerny’s Concerto for Four Hands. Karl Czerny was born in Vienna on February 21, 1791, and approximately ten months later, on December 5, the genius Mozart met his untimely death. The unique appeal of this album lies in the opportunity to hear these two “concertos for two pianos”—whose lives seem to intertwine like the leaves of a tree—performed together. In Japan, Carl Czerny is often known almost exclusively as the composer of those “Etudes for Piano.” However, he was actually a prolific composer, a pupil of Beethoven, and the teacher of the renowned Franz Liszt—a man brimming with talent. In recent years, there has been a remarkable revival of his works, making him a figure well worth watching. Czerny’s concertos “develop the Classical style and bridge the gap to the Romantic era”; they are masterpieces that offer truly magical moments, blending elegance with a lyricism reminiscent of Chopin’s nocturnes.
