Description:
Harnoncourt marshals an outsized Concentus Musicus and chorus for a splendid, opulent evening of music celebrating the bicentenary of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. Handel arr. Mozart: Alexander's Feast (Timotheus, oder Die Gewalt der Musik K.591) / Nikolaus Harnoncourt - Harnoncourt's eagerly awaited new recording is Handel's Alexander's Feast in Mozart's arrangement (Timotheus, oder Die Gewalt der Musik K.591), taped live in Vienna in November 2012. Handel's oratorio of 1736 was arranged by Mozart at the request of Baron Gottfried van Swieten, in an overture and two parts. Van Swieten, an Austrian diplomat who served as prefect of the Imperial Library and head of the book censorship commission, had a particular interest in baroque music and commissioned Mozart's arrangements of Handel works including Messiah and Alexander's Feast. He later gathered fellow aristocrats to found a "society of associated cavaliers", and these works were performed at its concerts. - That body was formally established in 1812 as the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (the Musikverein), and the work performed at its founding concert on 29 November 1812 was Alexander's Feast. Ignaz Franz von Mosel, who conducted on that occasion, made further additions to Mozart's arrangement, including a bass drum, celebrating the society's foundation in still more brilliant sonorities. - This two-disc set is a live recording of the concert marking the 200th anniversary of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, given in November 2012, exactly two centuries later. The forces are on a grand scale: more than fifty strings, three players to a part in the woodwind, trumpets and horns, two pairs of timpani, and, with the chorus, some two hundred performers in all - effectively every period-instrument player in Vienna. - The opening of Part Two includes a spoken address by Harnoncourt himself (in German). - Harnoncourt's live performance of Handel's original oratorio with the Concentus Musicus at the 1977 Bremen Music Festival was issued by Teldec, but this is the first recording of the Mozart arrangement. Working from the 1812 performing parts still preserved in the Musikverein's archive, Harnoncourt carried out painstaking research and verification, and the result is a moving performance that lives up to the subtitle "the power of music".
