Description:
A new recording from Nils Mönkemeyer, who alongside Antoine Tamestit ranks among the most sought-after violists in Europe today, devoted to the cornerstone of the viola repertoire: the two Brahms sonatas. His busy schedule is well known in Japan too — in March 2015 he performed Bartók's Viola Concerto at the Berlin Philharmonie during the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra's European tour. The two viola sonatas are among Brahms's last chamber works: concise yet refined pieces in which a restrained inner passion is always present. Originally written for clarinet, they are also played on the viola, whose range is close to it, and they occupy an important place in the instrument's relatively small repertoire. With a warm tone and finely detailed bowing, Mönkemeyer conjures up the luminous world of Brahms's final years. The four Hungarian Dances that complete the disc are heard, apart from No. 1 in Joachim's arrangement with piano accompaniment, in arrangements by present-day composers and performers. No. 4 comes in a version with string quartet accompaniment by the German composer Marco Hertenstein, who also contributed unaccompanied works to the bonus disc of Mönkemeyer's Bach "Solo Viola Sonatas". No. 5 is heard in an arrangement for piano and string quartet by Peter Wesenauer, who studied composition and conducting with Morricone and Gielen, and No. 16 in a string quartet version by Stephan Koncz, cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic. The collaboration with the Signum Quartett — a brilliant young German ensemble founded in 1994 and based in Cologne — adds further interest. [Profile] The German violist Nils Mönkemeyer was born in Bremen in 1978. Highly regarded by Bashmet and by Gerhard Schulz of the Alban Berg Quartett, he has an impressive list of honours: first prize at the ORF International Viola Competition and the Carl Flesch Prize in 2005, first prize at the Primrose Viola Competition, and in 2006 first prizes at both the Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition in Moscow and the German Music Competition. He enjoys a considerable reputation as a soloist and has recently turned to chamber music with partners such as Julia Fischer. After two years as professor at the Carl Maria von Weber Hochschule für Musik in Dresden and a period as associate professor at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, he has been professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München since 2011. He records exclusively for Sony Classical, for whom he has released seven albums. Sony Music
