Puccini (1858-1924)

Description:

Following the release of the "Puccini Album" in September 2015, we are pleased to announce the release of two films of Puccini's operas starring the tenor Jonas Kaufmann, who is on a roll. Both operas have been performed to great acclaim in Europe over the past few years and are now available on DVD and Blu-ray, allowing viewers to vividly relive the excitement and emotion of the productions. This production of "Daughter of the West" was recorded in a new production at the Vienna State Opera in October 2013. Although "The Daughter of the West" is not one of Puccini's most frequently performed operas, the mere mention of Kaufman's performance caused a stir, and this performance was quickly sold out.Set in California during the gold rush of the 19th century, the play centers on the love between Dick Johnson, the leader of a band of thieves, and Minnie, a tavern owner, and the confrontation with Sheriff Jack Lance over her. Puccini's beautiful melodies and dramatic orchestrations will move the audience's hearts. The dark voice of Kaufman (in his first role) and the dramatic singing and acting of his character make this production a perfect example of Puccini's meticulous and detailed musical interpretation, including "It has been six months since my father died" in which Johnson reveals his identity in Act II and the famous aria "The day of freedom will come soon" that Dick Johnson sings on the executioner's execution platform at the end of Act III. The charm of Puccini's music is expressed with an unparalleled degree of perfection. The two are surrounded by a host of men with a strong sense of presence, including Stemme, who plays the barroom flower Minnie. Conductor Welser-Möst spun a beautiful sound. All these elements come together to complete the story. Sony Music
