This is live footage from *The Chopin Dance Project*—Lang Lang’s new project combining Chopin’s works with ballet—which had its world premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. It is commonly believed that “Chopin’s waltzes are not meant to be danced to,” but Lang Lang’s “Dance Project” effortlessly shatters that preconception. While John Neumeier’s choreography for *La Traviata*, set to Chopin’s music, has long been a famous work, the choreography for this performance was handled by Stanton Welch, Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet. Unlike Nonmeyer’s approach, this production presents a spectacle of physical beauty and rhythmic interplay that unfolds with each piece. Well-trained bodies spin gracefully to the “Grand Waltz.” Beautiful steps gently enhance the poignant Ballade No. 1. You’ll surely be impressed by the ingenuity of these creative choices. Furthermore, Lang Lang’s performance is punctuated by his usual flamboyant gestures—it would be no exaggeration to call this a “dance” as well. Of course, some may raise an eyebrow at this.
