Following “Passaggio,” the album by Ludovico Einaudi that achieved great success in Europe—including winning a Gold Disc in the Netherlands—here is Ravinia Meyer’s second album for Sony Classical. Born in South Korea in 1983 and adopted into a Dutch family, Ravinia Meyer has been active as a soloist based in the Netherlands, performing throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia, with the goal of establishing the harp as a solo instrument—a long-held aspiration of hers. Acclaimed in various circles—including as a recipient of the Dutch Music Prize—she was recognized by Jared Sachs of Channel Classics in 2009 and has since released four albums. Each has been highly praised as an album that deeply explores the possibilities of the harp. With a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from pure classical music to contemporary works by Philip Glass and even popular music, she allows listeners to appreciate the beauty of the harp’s tone. During her debut concert in Japan in October 2014, she received high praise for her “melancholic yet dignified tone.” This album features works such as Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and Satie’s “Gymnopédie No. 1” and “Gnossiennes Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5,” among other masterpieces by modern French composers that showcase the harp’s beauty, as well as a piece from the film *Amélie* by French composer Yann Tiersen (arranged for harp by Lavinia herself). In her performances of French works, her ability to maintain the delicate timbre of the original piano pieces while delivering highly artistic, deeply emotional interpretations is one of her greatest strengths. The interplay of light and shadow that emerges from her playing could truly be described as “Impressionist-like” on the harp. In the original works for harp and orchestra by Ravel and Debussy, the accompaniment by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, a cutting-edge chamber orchestra, truly shines.
