Each year's concert is released on CD, DVD and Blu-ray and sells in large numbers. - Zubin Mehta's fifth New Year's Concert. The 2015 concert is conducted by Zubin Mehta (born 1936), returning for the fifth time and the first since 2007. Mehta, who studied in Vienna with the renowned teacher Hans Swarowsky alongside Claudio Abbado, has long ties with the Vienna Philharmonic as a regular guest at its subscription concerts, at festivals and on international tours; forty years after their first collaboration in 1961, he was made an honorary member in 2001. The orchestra has said: "After more than fifty years of musical collaboration with Maestro Mehta, we have come to enjoy a very close friendship with him." - Five works new to the New Year's Concert. Alongside the traditional encores "The Blue Danube" and the "Rákóczi March", the programme includes such favourites as "Village Swallows from Austria", "Perpetuum mobile", "Accelerationen" and "Wine, Women and Song", together with a run of less familiar but thoroughly rewarding pieces such as the "Elektro-magnetische Polka", "Mit Dampf", the "Studenten-Polka" and the "Freiheits-Marsch". Five works appear at the New Year's Concert for the first time. - Sound that captures the Vienna Philharmonic Crisp picture and sound convey with great immediacy the splendour of the flower-bedecked Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The audio on the Blu-ray and DVD comes from the ORF, which has handled the live broadcast for many years, and is thoroughly dependable — comparing the various formats is itself an interesting exercise.
