This is one of the seven titles in the "GLIORIGINALI (The Originals)" series, which revives masterpieces from the original masters by Sony in Italy. Abbado's unique Verdi crystallizes his gushing passion to the utmost precision. This is a recording Abbado made for RCA in Italy in 1978, just before he assumed the position of principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1979. The six pieces are filled with the essence of Abbado's Verdi en sono, which he controlled and crystallized intelligently, while at the same time showing a gushing passion, as is typical of the Italian conductor. The overture to "Aida" is not the usual prelude, but a larger-scale overture that was not performed at the premiere but was later restaged by Toscanini.
