This is the third recording of Schubert's symphonies by Antonello Manacorda and the Kammerakademie Potsdam for Sony Classical, and includes his masterpiece Symphony No. 2, an early work full of song, and his masterpiece No. 4 "Tragic" in the tense key of C minor. The program is conducted by Antonello Manacor. Conductor Antonello Manacorda was born in Turin, studied violin with Hermann Krebser and Franco Grilli, and founded the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Claudio Abbado, serving as its concertmaster for eight years. Since 2011, he has been the Chief Conductor of the Kammerakademie Potsdam.The orchestra is a chamber orchestra of modern instruments, but it uses period instrumentation and ancient instruments for brass and timpani, and has been noted for its vitality, appearing on "The Flute King" by Emmanuel Pajou (EMI) and on mandolinist Avi Avital's Bach album (DG). Their Schubert is also beautifully played. Their Schubert also has a beautiful, faintly melancholy quality, but their precise, lively playing brings out the spirit of the young Schubert in his works.
