Surprise Chef—a band formed in 2017 on the outskirts of Le Bourne, Australia, that describes itself as playing “moody instrumental jazz-funk”—releases its first new album in a year. Based in Australia, Surprise Chef’s music places a strong emphasis on evoking mood. Their vivid arrangements construct soundscapes that manipulate time and space, drawing listeners into their world. The members of Surprise Chef are Lachlan Stucky on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keyboards, Karl Lindberg on bass, Andrew Kongs on drums, and Hudson Whitlock, the newest member who handles everything from percussion to composition and production. This album was recorded over the course of nine days. In terms of song structure, the band intended to incorporate techniques inspired by film scoring. Specifically, this involves the repetition and insertion of musical themes used throughout the album to express concepts, moods, and emotions. The musical influences on this album stem primarily from several European film score composers active from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. Rather than relying on a large orchestra, they used drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion, and vibraphone to create musical themes that evoke captivating drama and emotion in the listener—even without having seen the films for which the music was composed.
