Originally released on May 21, 1980, this album is part of the music written for "Star Wars" by composer John Williams. Performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of conductor Charles Gerhardt, this single-disc record was meant to complement, not compete with, the two-disc "official" soundtrack released a month earlier on RSO Records. The album features the concert suite from The Empire Strikes Back (March of the Empire, Han Solo and the Princess, Yoda's Theme, and Asteroid Field), as well as Alfred Newman's Fox Fanfare, Maestro Williams' Main Title/Exploring the Empire, Jedi Knight Training, and other film music The film consists of several songs from the To avoid repetition of familiar tunes, Williams, conductor Charles Gerhardt, and producer George Korngold (son of composer Erich Korngold, one of Williams' musical heroes), had the 96-member National Symphony Orchestra create new arrangements and orchestrations were presented.
