R.E.M., a leading American rock band celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, reissued their first single released on Hib-Tone Records in 1981 for the first time in 40 years! The first single, "Radio Free Europe," which triggered R.E.M.'s breakthrough, was released on Hib-Tone Records, a small record label in Atlanta. Produced by Mitch Easter, the original single featured different mixes by Easter and label owner Johnny Hibbert. The band preferred Easter's mix, but Hibbert adopted Easter's, and the single was released in 1981 in a limited 45-rpm edition in a black-and-white sleeve with an original photo of Michael Stipe, and has become a popular collector's item. "Radio Free Europe" was later re-recorded for the band's first album released on I.R.S. Records and made the band's chart debut at #78 on the Billboard Pop Charts. The album, "Murmur," reached #36 on the album chart, and the band went on to dominate college radio stations and receive critical acclaim.The compilation album Eponymous, released in 1988, contains a single called "The Original Hibbertone," but it is actually an original mix by Easter, not Hibbert. This limited edition 7-inch is the first re-release of the original "Radio Free Europe" recorded in Hibbutone, and is housed in a replica sleeve. The recordings were added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2009.
