Panda Bear (Animal Collective) and Sonic Boom have completed their second album! A new frontier in free-spirited, pop-infused psychedelia that reimagines elements like the harp, steel pan, yodeling, and pedal steel as "cool sounds" Noah Lennox (Panda Bear of Animal Collective) and Peter Kember (Sonic Boom) have released “A?ofWHEN,” their second collaborative album! The album features harp loops by Mary Latimore, steel pan sequences, a mesh-like soundscape of pedal steel, and even yodel-like vocals by Panda Bear. These are all deliberate choices—new timbres and textures introduced to clearly distance themselves from the success of their previous album, *Reset*. It’s safe to say that this experiment has worked brilliantly. From the pastoral psychedelia of “Something Like Dreaming” to the wall-of-sound soul of “Like a Moth to a Flame” and the distortion lurking beneath the simple pop of “Revive Him,” the album is composed of diverse sonic landscapes. Listening to the album, one gets the sense of running around like a child within the duo’s musical playground. However, this work is not merely an extension of their playful spirit; rather, it is a work that casts an even stronger gaze upon contemporary society than ever before. While addressing themes such as online fatigue, chronic depression, political turmoil, and environmental issues, the album still respects the power of luck and calls for mutual tolerance in these chaotic times. Part of the title was inspired by Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), and “BetheBridge” explores the themes of asking for help and offering it. “LikeaMothtoaFlame” questions the human tendency to be drawn to the light even while understanding the potential for destruction. The title track, “A?ofWHEN,” humorously depicts the inevitable “moment of reckoning” that will eventually arrive. The album as a whole is sprinkled with pop elements, including upbeat, bouncy beats, flute, and lyrics about cats and flip-flops. (1/2)
