Breaking down boundaries and entering a world of freedom. North London-based five-piece band, Thorley, releases their third album "COSPLAY"! North London indie rock band Sawley has released their new album "COSPLAY" on the Domino label. The band was formed by childhood friends Asha Lorenz and Louis O'Brien. The band now consists of five members: drummer Lincoln Barrett, multi-instrumentalist Campbell Baum, and electronics player Marco Pini. The band's third album, "COSPLAY," is a work that breaks down and redraws the musical boundaries that have been built up over the course of their career. It is a free world where anyone can be anyone, where reality and fantasy, life and death, past and present are intermingled. Echoes", the opening track of the album, is a new song following the preceding singles "Waxwing", "Jetplane", and "JIVE", which were released before the announcement of Aruba My.The song was inspired by a poem by one of the performers at a poetry event Asha often attended, in which a boy shouts into a tunnel, "Echo, echo, echo/I love you, echo," and waits for a response. The song tells the story of a boy who is so in love that he loses sight of himself, and eventually an "echo" comes between the two of them and becomes a third party. COSPLAY" is littered with references to pop culture. Waxwing" depicts Mickey Mouse, who always lurks deep inside but never reveals himself, while "Jetplane" quotes Guided by Voices' classic anthem "Hot Freaks," which is about the decadence of celebrity. Candle" is a tribute to Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" and a reaction to the recent boom in Dylan movies starring Timothée Chalamet. And in "In The Dark," a reference to Yukio Mishima appears, which Asha and Lewis were reading while recording "Cosplay. At the same time, the band draws inspiration from their own past songs and demos. The song "hold me" at the beginning of "Echoes" was taken from Lewis' early SoundCloud postings, while "JIVE" evolved from Asha's popular SoundCloud demo. Sorley's recording process is not linear. Many of the songs on "Cosplay" first took shape in the studio that Asha and Lewis shared, and the samples and features of the demos that emerged there were integrated into the final recordings. Other songs take a more varied approach, first being recorded by the entire band and then brought back to the studio for their own sampling treatment. Small sparkles of sound are also hidden deep within the songs, such as the pulsating keyboards of "Echoes" and the vocal processing of "Into The Dark." In addition, the band supported Fontaines D.C. on their UK/Ireland arena tour at the end of 2024, playing to thousands of people.The sense of scale and confidence gained there is strongly reflected in "COSPLAY," bringing a new confidence in who they are and what they can become to the work.
