LA-based acoustic singer/songwriter Julia Holter has released her sixth album "Something in the Room She Moves" on Domino. In contrast to her previous works, which were based on themes such as "the depths of memory" and "a fluffy, dreamlike future," this album depicts a worldview that focuses on her "present. She describes the album as "inspired by and focused on the complexity and transformativity of our bodies. The pitch continuum of the fretless electric bass, which is counterpointed by the smooth vocal melody, and the sound of the Yamaha CS-60 intertwine with the warm wind and string tones. She comments on the rich harmonies in the song, "I wanted to create a world that evoked the inner sound world of the body, using sounds like water that is constantly flowing.After a series of dream-pop releases, from the 2012 breakthrough Ekstasis to Loud City Song and Have You in My Wilderness, Holter released Aviary, a sprawling and thrilling experimental work, in 2018. Since then, she has worked on film scores such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always and performed the live score for The Passion of Joan of Arc with the Opera North choir. She also continues to collaborate with her partner, musician Tashi Wada, who plays synth and bagpipes on her new album. Something in the Room She Moves is a remarkable advance in Holter's work, integrating free, improvisational energy with her signature eloquence.
