It is one of the most famous events in classical music—a major spectacle broadcast via TV and radio from Vienna’s iconic Golden Musikverein Hall to over 70 countries worldwide, attracting an audience of 400 million viewers. With a history spanning more than 70 years since its inception in 1939, this concert features waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family—symbols of Vienna, the City of Music—and its high-priced tickets are said to be the hardest to obtain in the world. In 2013, the Austrian prodigy Franz Welser-Möst (born 1960) took the podium. Since making his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1988, he has been one of the orchestra’s most important conductors; since 2002, he has also served as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, and since 2010, he has concurrently held the key position of Music Director at the Vienna State Opera. In 2011, he appeared at the New Year’s Concert, becoming the first Austrian conductor to do so since Karajan. The program included not only classics such as “The Blue Danube” and the “Rákóczi March,” but also works making their debut in the history of the New Year’s Concert. Sony Music
