A collection of Beethoven’s works performed by the fortepiano virtuoso Immazer. “Discs 1–3” comprise the complete Beethoven piano concertos. Among complete recordings by fortepiano performers such as Malcolm Bilson and Steven Rubin, Immazell stands out as the foremost figure in terms of freedom and exuberance. In the early works—No. 1 and No. 2—Immazeller performs his own improvised cadenzas. His interpretive approach, which powerfully expresses both the tradition and innovation of Beethoven—who brought the Classical period to its culmination and opened the door to the Romantic era—is highly acclaimed. The set also includes the Violin Concerto, featuring Vera Beth’s lively violin playing. Throughout the entire collection, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, led by Bruno Weil, provides superb support. “Discs 4–5” feature the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas, performed by Baroque cello master Bilsma and fortepiano virtuoso Imazel. Bilsma had previously recorded these works with Bilson for Nonsuch in 1986 and 1989; this marks a re-recording after a decade, and with Immazer as his partner, they deliver a seamless and thrilling performance.
