David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra’s complete Schubert symphony cycle, which began with Symphony No. 7, “The Unfinished,” released in 2011, is finally concluded with this Symphony No. 8, “The Great.” Although they are a modern orchestra, Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra are capable of freely adapting their performance style to match the era of the works. Here, they boldly incorporate period performance practices, such as meticulous articulation in the strings, as well as period-style trumpets, horns, trombones, and timpani. While his interpretation was extremely orthodox during his guest appearance with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in January 2009, in this performance with the Tonhalle—nearly 20 years after he became its chief conductor in 1995—Zinman’s interpretation is realized more thoroughly in every respect, including the repetitions. This masterpiece, into which Schubert poured his very soul, has been cleansed of its past grime and revived with a fresh, crystalline sound.
