[Discs 1 & 3] feature performances by Friedrich Bernius, a German choral conductor specializing in early music who strives to faithfully reproduce music from before the 18th century based on the original sources. This collection includes lively secular cantatas by Bach and a selection of motets that offer a deeply moving listening experience. [Disc 2] features cantatas recorded for Vivarte separately from the Teldec complete set; the musical flow is remarkably smooth, and the performance is steady. [Disc 4] is a SEON recording. In the solo cantatas—featuring Egmont on bass, who also participated extensively in the Teldec complete collection, and conducted by Brüggen, who was just beginning his conducting career—the combination of human warmth and tension creates a wonderful effect.
