David Zinman's latest recording, marking his 75th birthday: the complete Brahms symphonies. Live performances in which the great German Brahms tradition is brought vividly back to life. Zinman turned 75 on 9 July 2011. Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich since 1995, he has taken this distinguished ensemble to still greater heights. In his complete Beethoven symphonies, overtures and concertos, his Mozart violin concertos and his Schumann symphonies he offered bold, ground-breaking readings that drew on period practice, while in his Richard Strauss orchestral works and his Mahler symphony cycle he achieved a sound that balances stylishness and opulence to perfection. Here he turns to Brahms, the summit of Romanticism. Zinman describes Brahms as "the most Romantic of composers", yet the first impression these performances make is of a rugged, unvarnished Brahms – a twenty-first-century revival of the traditional, eloquent Brahms of his teacher Monteux and of Suitner. Generous use of legato in the strings brings out the Romantic warmth, to which are added the unaffected beauty of the woodwind and the rich sonority of the brass at full stretch. The transitions from development to recapitulation proceed with proper measure, never losing structural coherence, and the way the woodwind emerge above a firm bass foundation gives the playing a solid, unpretentious German weight. Zinman follows the score to the letter, never resorting to an unmarked accelerando to whip up excitement – and it is astonishing that music of such commanding architecture should result. The orchestra's home, the Tonhalle Zurich, is one of Switzerland's finest concert halls, opened in 1895 with Brahms himself in attendance – yet this is the first complete Brahms cycle the Tonhalle Orchestra has recorded. The three-way partnership of a conductor at the height of his powers, an orchestra responding to his every nuance and a hall of generous acoustic is superbly captured by Chris Hazell and Simon Eadon, the team who have engineered Zinman's Tonhalle recordings ever since his Decca years. The performances were recorded at concerts in April 2010, and this is in all likelihood the first live recording by Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra to be released. Sony Music
