Description:
Joan Batista Pla (1720–1773) & Josep (José) Pla (1728–1762), brothers born in Catalonia, Spain, were renowned as oboists and composers who enjoyed great success in cities such as Padua, Stuttgart, Brussels, Paris, and London. After Josep’s death, Joan continued his career as an oboist and bassoonist in Lisbon. Their style, which combines elements of the Rococo with the late Baroque and early Classical styles, may strike one as more refined and refreshing—reminiscent of J. C. Bach—rather than distinctly Spanish. While recordings of their works are scarce today, SONY previously released a collection of concertos performed by Rampal. The music of Ensemble Zephyr fully embodies the elements that bring these concertos to life: leader Bernardini’s warm tone and expressive oboe playing, plucking strings, a rugged horn timbre, and light, fast tempos. Furthermore, the improvisational ornamentation scattered throughout—a skillful technique that weaves a unique sense of dynamism into the melodies, something rarely heard in other performances—is fully on display here as well. Ensemble Zephyr was founded in 1989 by baroque oboists Alfredo Bernardini and Paolo Grazzi—who had both performed as members of some of Europe’s leading Baroque orchestras—and and Baroque bassoonist Alberto Grazzi, as a music ensemble centered on period woodwind instruments. It was named “Zephyr” after the name of a god. Since then, Zephyr has continued to perform at major European music festivals and in various countries around the world, earning acclaim from both audiences and the media. In addition, the ensemble has won numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque (Diapason) for its recordings of Zelenka’s complete sonatas and Mozart’s wind ensemble works (on the Astre label), and is regarded as the world’s premier ensemble specializing in period woodwind instruments. They made their first visit to Japan in 2005 and returned in January 2011, presenting performances full of a playful spirit unlike anything heard before.
