Description:

"Released to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Vladimir Horowitz" First release of privately held live recordings made by Horowitz at the height of his powers. Haydn and Beethoven played with the overwhelming intensity that only Horowitz brought to a live audience. - A document of Horowitz in his absolute prime The eight years from 1945 to 1953, the year he celebrated the 25th anniversary of his American debut, saw Horowitz - then aged 42 to 50 - taking on new repertoire with great enthusiasm and performing and recording more prolifically than at any other time, principally in New York but throughout the United States as well. He was under exclusive contract to RCA at the time, but separately, between 1949 and 1950, he paid out of his own pocket to have a recording team called the Carnegie Hall Recording Corporation record his Carnegie Hall recitals so that he could listen back to them later. This body of recordings, documenting some eighteen recitals in their entirety, was donated to Yale University about two and a half years before Horowitz's death and is preserved in the Vladimir Horowitz - Wanda Toscanini Archive. - Playing that captures his irresistible momentum before an audience This album is the second in the three-CD series "VLADIMIR HOROWITZ AT CARNEGIE HALL - THE PRIVATE COLLECTION," containing three sonatas by Haydn and Beethoven recorded live between 1945 and 1947. - Remastered from the original sources in the best possible condition These are mono recordings originally captured on enormous 16-inch acetate (lacquer) discs, but because they were made by professionals rather than being off-air or amateur audience tapings, the quality is more than adequate. The transfers are by Jon Samuels, formerly an engineer and reissue producer at BMG Classics and producer of releases such as The William Kapell Edition. An expert who has written on Horowitz's discography, he has carefully reproduced originals beset by surface noise, pitch instability and other problems, remastering them without resorting to any drastic noise reduction.
