Released as the seventh installment of their Mahler Symphony Cycle—which was completed in 2010, the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth, with recordings of all ten numbered symphonies—this acclaimed album is now available on standard CD. This Seventh Symphony is the most enigmatic of all Mahler’s symphonies and is known for being the most difficult to interpret. It is titled “Song of the Night” in Japanese, a name derived from the fact that the composer himself designated the second and fourth movements as “Nachtmusik” (Night Music). With the appearance of instruments not typically found in orchestral works—such as the tenor horn, guitar, and mandolin—as well as its stark contrasts between light and dark and sections that may sound disjointed at first listen, the work’s complex nature allows a conductor’s individuality to truly shine. Zinman, who has studied Mahler’s autograph scores in the Concertgebouw archives since his time in the Netherlands and has staged performances of Mahler’s works during his stints in Rochester and Baltimore, has strong opinions regarding the interpretation of Mahler’s music. “Each of Mahler’s symphonies is like a chapter in a epic novel,” he says. For his third cycle with the Tonhalle Zurich, he performed the symphonies in numerical order, with recordings made concurrently. Zinman’s conviction—that a clear and compelling interpretation of Mahler emerges only through a strict and precise reproduction of what is written in the score, rather than through the emotionally driven interpretations characteristic of Bernstein—is clearly demonstrated by this series of recordings with the Tonhalle Zurich. With Zurich’s Tonhalle—renowned for having some of the finest acoustics in Europe—serving as the recording venue, the sound crafted by the team of former Decca engineers Chris Hazel and Simon Eydon—who have been working with Zinman on Tonhalle recordings since his Decca days—is an outstanding recording that captures every nuance of Mahler’s complex orchestration.
