James Galway, a master of the flute, returns to RCA with a new recording! This time, he takes on a Cuban classic jazz style! For Gallway, the term “crossover” seems to evoke the image of the great French composer and arranger Claude Bolling; however, the concept for this band was to take the approach he used on his previous Latina album a step further and aim for a more compact band sound. It’s more of a Latin jazz sound than a Bolling-style one. ~For example, perhaps something like Claire Fischer, Dave Valentine, or Hubert Laws? The fact that he mentions “syncopated Afro-Cuban rhythms” and so on in the music video is proof of this. Having actually traveled to Cuba and experienced Cuban culture firsthand, Galway’s rhythms revealed commonalities with the Irish music of his homeland. As always, Galway’s flute playing is elegant, but he plays an octave higher than Claude Bolling’s original sheet music, significantly alters the rhythm, and—perhaps with a crossover sensibility—moves away from the rich, resonant, and luxurious tone of his earlier work, which was the epitome of easy listening, he played with a husky, gritty tone (to put it crudely, perhaps in the style of H. Lowes?). He’s truly reached full maturity! Even the Latin music he’s long wanted to tackle has finally reached the pinnacle of perfection. For this “old but still going strong” guy, I hope he doesn’t stop here—I want him to take on even more challenges. Now, the Miami-based Cuban band “Tiempo Libre,” which is performing alongside Galway this time, was formed in 2001 around pianist Jorge Gómez—who previously played with the Bobby Calcasas Group and others—and was nominated for the 2005 and 2007 Grammy Awards in the and is currently one of the most talked-about timbales bands in the U.S. The group is highly regarded even among Latin music enthusiasts, and Galway, too, has been swept up in their rhythmic waves. No matter what anyone says, there’s no denying that this is a superb Latin sound perfect for savoring the end of summer. I highly recommend it! [Comment provided by BMG Japan]
