Brioschi: Six Symphonies Antonio Brioschi was a little-known composer active near Milan from around 1730 to 1750. The symphonies included here are among the earliest examples of what are known as Classical-era symphonies. He was a highly popular and prolific early symphony composer, and it is estimated that many of his works were composed in the 1730s or even earlier. Most of the symphonies are written for a three- or four-part string orchestra and follow a three-movement structure. Furthermore, most movements are in sonata form or two-part form, and it was standard for the first movement to be in sonata form. The movements in sonata form feature extensive development and are characterized by a clearer structure than those of Sanmartini (a style entirely different from Vivaldi’s sinfonie). The music has a refreshing quality that evokes the fresh breeze blowing through Milan. Furthermore, the lively, cheerful, and joyful performance on period instruments is deeply relaxing.
