A biographical film about the genius Glenn Gould. Thirty-two episodes woven together against the backdrop of Gould’s performances. Directed by François Girard (The Red Violin, Silk), and produced by Nive Fitchman, this film focuses on Glenn Gould (1932–1982). It garnered attention as the first “biographical film” about the Canadian piano prodigy, who refused to perform in public and devoted himself entirely to recordings and writing. Filming began in 1992, marking the 10th anniversary of Gould’s death; the film was completed and released in theaters in 1993, winning a Genie Award, Canada’s equivalent of the “Academy Awards.” The title “Chapter 32” refers to the structure of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”—which has become synonymous with Gould—(the theme aria + 30 variations + the da capo aria = 1 + 30 + 1). By interweaving episodes featuring Gould, played by Colm Feore (*City of Angels*, *24*), with interviews of people who actually knew him, the film brings to light a previously unknown side of Gould.
