Kegel's Bizet, recorded in 1987 in the conductor's final years, in which the sheer beauty of the music is thrown into unusually pure relief - now on SACD at last. Outstanding engineering by C. Struben. Coupled with Stravinsky works recorded in analogue in 1973. For this release the Bizet has been newly transferred from the master tapes recorded on U-Matic and held in the country of origin. The 35th instalment of our SACD Hybrid series. This Bizet, recorded digitally in 1987, near the end of Herbert Kegel's life (1920-90), is known for a severe, uncompromising manner entirely free of Latin swagger. Dark, weighty and richly beautiful, it is an album without equal for the listener who wants to immerse themselves in these famous melodies. It owes everything to Kegel's own interpretative stamp, to the thoroughness with which he confronts a score, and to the particular conditions of the old East Germany - production team and orchestra alike - that produced it; performances like this will never come again. The wholehearted commitment brought to every number of L'Arlesienne is remarkable, and the sense of weight even in the smallest pieces is characteristic of the conductor. By 1987 ETERNA's digital recording was fully established, and this source material is free of the thinness and the extremes of dynamic range that caused sound to recede in the earliest digital sessions; the result is easy on the ear. It can fairly be called an outstanding digital recording from the fine engineer C. Struben. For this new remastering we have added a selection of Stravinsky works recorded in 1973 to the original Bizet album. The touch Kegel brings to the rarely performed Suites Nos. 1 and 2 chimes with the earlier items on the disc, and the straightforwardness of the Dumbarton Oaks Concerto is likewise typical of a conductor who lays bare the essence of a work.
