Description:
ODNOPOZOV, who was also the Vienna Philharmonic's conductor, left this valuable recording for ETERNA during his tour in Dresden. Excellent recording at Luke Church. World's first SACD release! Mastered only in analog domain and directly converted to DSD! The 28th SACD hybrid version of ETERNA's latest reissue of the original analog tapes from the home country, a rare masterpiece recording of the essence of Viennese string performance, is now available for the first time in Japan. Born in Buenos Aires to Russian immigrants, Riccardo ODONOPOZOV (1914-2004) showed exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Higher School of Music in Berlin under Rudolf Demann and Carl Flesch. After winning the Vienna International Competition at the age of 18, he caught the eye of Clemens Krauss, Chief Conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic (the Philharmonic had a Chief Conductor system until 1933), and was chosen without examination to become Concertmaster of the Philharmonic. He was a trusted soloist with such great conductors as Felix Weingartner, Bruno Walter, and Wilhelm Furtwängler, and won second prize at the 1937 Ysaÿe Competition, beating David Oistrakh to the top prize. He left the Vienna Philharmonic when he became too busy as a soloist. During World War II, he was based in the U.S., and from 1956 he was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, while also performing as a soloist. This SACD hybrid recording was made in July 1971 for the East German Eterna label during a musical tour of Dresden with the Viennese pianist Eduard Mrazek (1929-2001). He was already a familiar face in Dresden, having appeared with the Dresden Philharmonic in 1960, 1962, and 1970, as well as in April 1971, when he played Bartók's Second with Mazur conducting. From the introduction of the "Rondo Brilliante", Schubert's elegant and refined performance, with its lustrous and varied tone, smooth technique, and exquisite intonation, deeply depicts the content of the music. The performance is a masterpiece. It is also worth mentioning that the masterful recording in Luke's Church in Dresden, which has given birth to many legendary recordings, is crisp and soft, with a natural soundstage and rich atmosphere, and captures the two musicians' performances in the finest possible manner.
