A new album from the German-South American cellist Claudio Bohórquez. He first met Christoph Eschenbach in 1999, and says he has learned a great deal from a musician who insists that "perfection is boring". Bohórquez has often invoked the phrase "on the shoulders of giants" to express his gratitude to those who came before him, and here he has persuaded Eschenbach to join him in a programme of four works: Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, Schumann's Adagio and Allegro, Webern's Two Pieces and Messiaen's Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus. The Messiaen was written in 1940 at the prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz – the same year in which Eschenbach was born in Breslau, some 140 km to the east. 【About the works】 Franz Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata Composed in Vienna in November 1824 for the arpeggione, a guitar-like instrument devised and built in 1823 by the Viennese luthier Johann Georg Stauffer (1776–1853). The instrument never caught on, and when the sonata was published by Gotthard in 1871 cello and violin parts were added. Today it is a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Robert Schumann: Adagio and Allegro Composed in Dresden in February 1849. Written for horn and piano, it was originally entitled "Romanze und Allegro". Schumann himself made versions for cello and piano and for violin and piano. Immediately after its completion Clara Schumann praised it warmly: "Brilliant, fresh and passionate – exactly the kind of piece I love." Anton von Webern: Two Pieces for cello and piano Composed in Klagenfurt in 1899. Webern learned the piano from his mother from the age of five and studied cello and music theory with Edwin Komauer from the age of twelve. At home the family played trios, with his elder sister Maria at the piano, his younger sister Rosa on violin and Anton on cello. These pieces, written when he was fifteen, are his earliest surviving works – composed five years before he met Schoenberg, and immediately appealing in tone. Messiaen: Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus Composed in December 1940 at Stalag VIII-A in Görlitz, eastern Germany. The events leading up to it, in sequence: ● April 1940: Messiaen is assigned to the theatre and music centre of the Second Army at Verdun. There he meets the cellist Corporal Étienne Pasquier and the clarinettist Henri Akoka (1912–1976), who had arrived before him. (1/4)
