Description:

Three trumpet concertos that German trumpeter Simon Haefele says "always fascinated me with their darkness" are included. Christian Joost's "Pietà," which mourns the death of Chet Baker; Toshio Hosokawa's "In the Fog," inspired by Hermann Hesse's dark poem "In the Fog" from his 28-year-old life; and the sad black spiritual "Nobody Knows Me," which is also connected to the album title "nobody knows and Bernd Alois Zimmermann's work inspired the sad black spiritual "Nobody Knows My Troubles," which leads to the album's title "nobody knows. None of the pieces are familiar, but the trumpet's expressive power is amazing, and the orchestra's sound is varied and rewarding. About the work] Joost: "Pietà" was completed in 2004. Subtitled "In Memoriam Chet Baker," it is one of the "Requiem Trilogy" begun in 2000 (the others are "Dies Ire" for trombone and orchestra and "Lux Eterna" for alto saxophone and orchestra). The lyrical Adagio mourns the tragic death of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker [1929-1988]. Co-commissioned by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Conservatory of Music and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Toshio Hosokawa: "In the Fog," completed in 2013. Inspired by the poem "In the Fog" by Hermann Hesse at the age of 28. The concept is that the trumpet symbolizes a person and the orchestra symbolizes the nature surrounding the person, the fog. Co-commissioned by the Suntory Hall International Composition Commission Series and the North German Radio (NDR). Zimmermann: Trumpet Concerto "Nobody Knows My Troubles" was completed in 1954. The work is based on the Negro spiritual "Nobody Knows My Troubles," famous for its sad and beautiful melody and sorrowful lyrics. The melody is familiar in classical instrumental versions from Kreisler to the "12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic," but in Zimmermann's hands it is quite amazing.Inspired by the American civil rights movement that was in full swing at the time, the orchestra includes jazz percussion, guitar, piano, and Hammond organ, partly as a statement against racial hatred and discrimination, and partly because Zimmermann is a jazz lover by nature. Commissioned by the North German Radio (NDR). (1/3)
