Kurt Sanderling, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

Description:

Project for the 10th anniversary of his death. This is a masterpiece from the former East Germany in the 1970s, faithfully reproducing Sibelius' score. The sincere masterpieces reflecting Sanderling's personality are now available in high sound quality for the first time in the world except for 4 tracks! Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! This set is the 15th SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of the original ETERNA analog tapes in Japan, and was recorded by the famous German conductor Kurt Sanderling (1912-2011) and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the chief conductor from 1960, from 1970 to 1977 in East Germany. The complete Sibelius symphonies were recorded at Eterna in East Germany between 1970 and 1977 with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, which he had been the chief conductor since 1960. At that time, Eterna recorded Nos. 1, 2, and 7 with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra under Galagly, No. 4 with the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra under Kegel, and No. 6 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Berglund. The two excellent recordings of these two pieces have led to a complete release of the entire cycle. The excellence of these two recordings created momentum for the complete cycle, which was completed with the recording of Nos. 6 & 7 and No. 2 in 1974, No. 1 in 1976, and No. 4 in 1977. Sanderling's Sibelius is characterized by a combination of his skill in expressing the score in a straightforward and meaningful manner and the depth of his symphonic sound, and his recordings of the complete works are in a completely unique league of their own.In recent years, performances that delicately express the textures of Sibelius' sound in a cold, transparent sound have become popular, but Sanderling, while making the most of the delicate interplay of sounds, beautifully expresses the power and scale that Sibelius' music originally contains in a natural musical flow. The analog recording by Eterna in its heyday is also completely free of any irritating sensations, and the massive and organic orchestral sound is beautifully reproduced. These masterpieces, which embody the musicality of Sanderling himself in a very concrete way, are worthy of being reissued in high sound quality. The recordings fully utilize the special features of the SACD, and we hope that the high sound quality of the reissue will further enhance the reputation of the performances. For this reissue, the master tapes were flown from the label to the studio of Vienna-based mastering engineer Christoph Stickel, where they were mastered in the analog domain, and then digitized using two separate systems: DSD for the SACD layer and PCM for the CD layer. The project was then digitized into a product. This project was mastered in the most ideal way conceivable today. The effect is remarkable: it is now possible to reproduce the quality left on the master tapes with extreme fidelity, and the mastering and direct DSD conversion in the analog domain only has an even greater sonic effect. The result is a clearer, higher-resolution recording that is sure to bring about a further appreciation of the performance. The manual also includes a photo of the outer box of the original analog master tape used in this project. (1/2)
