Description:
The second SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of the original ETERNA analog tapes in Japan! Kegel's first legendary "Carmina" recording, a superb performance recorded in 1960, is finally available on SACD for the first time in the world! Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! Kegel's first magnificent "Carmina Burana" recorded in 1960, in the early stereo era, before the "Trionfi Trilogy" recorded later in the mid-1970s, has been revived on SACD! The impact of this superb performance, which was one of the triggers of Kegel's reevaluation, is enormous, and the new production from the original analog master tapes in the country of origin has made it even more awesome. In particular, the enthusiasm that forms the basis of this performance, the enunciation of the soloists and chorus, and the response of the orchestra to Kegel's spectacular conducting are a must-hear. This masterpiece, more highly acclaimed than the later 1974/75 re-recordings, is reproduced in a more dynamic version. As with the later re-recordings, the chorus is especially fine in this performance, which is a testament to the high standards of East Germany at that time, but it is also important to note that the recording was made by engineer Klaus Streuben, who was also a leading expert in recording. While it can be said that this is an early stereo recording from the former East Germany and thus does not reach the physical standards of today, the texture of the instruments and voices, their sense of balance, and their fervor are unparalleled.Along with the performance, the work of the engineers of the time who accurately conveyed this unprecedentedly passionate performance to the present day is also a historical legacy. The main session recordings of "Carmina Burana" in 1960 were Jochum's monaural recording for DG (1952), Savarisch's EMI disc (1956 monaural), and Stokowski (1958), and Ormandy's CBS disc, also recorded in 1960. After the Jochum re-recording (1967), which became the definitive recording, the number of recordings by various labels increased at once, and it is still fresh in our memories that this piece became a popular piece. Among the many recordings of the same piece, Kegel's 1960 recording is still highly acclaimed. The high level of the chorus, which shows the underlying strength of the German performers, is noteworthy and has a high influence on the performance reputation of this piece. In that sense, if Jochum's 1967 disc is the Western Yokozuna, this Kegel disc is the Eastern Yokozuna, and that is no exaggeration. There are probably not many recordings of this work that are so earnest in their approach. It may be said that it is a product of the former East Germany. (1/2)
