Description:

Live concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1995 Dresden bombing. Haitink's Mahler "Resurrection" Early in his tenure as principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (1963-1988), Haitink completed a recording of the complete symphonies, and he has also performed many Mahler symphonies in parallel with his recordings. He is renowned as one of the most prolific Mahler conductors of our time, and has made seven recordings of the Second Symphony, the most of any conductor, along with the First Symphony, as follows.1968 Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (session recording) *Complete Works Series 1984 Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (live recording) *Video Works 1990 Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (live recording) 1993 Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (live recording) (session recording)1995 Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (live recording)2008 Chicago Symphony Orchestra (live recording)This new release from Profil comes on February 13, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the "Dresden Bombing," a known massacre of civilians during WWII, This is Haitink's eighth recording from the concert he conducted with the Staatskapelle Dresden at the Semperoper in Dresden on February 13, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the "Dresden bombings," a massacre of civilians during World War II.As is well known, it is customary for the Staatskapelle Dresden to hold a memorial concert on February 13 each year after the bombing of Dresden, with a program including a Requiem and a Mass. The previous year, in 1994, the Staatskapelle Dresden had performed Berlioz's "Requiem" under Colin Davis. Mahler's "Resurrection" is an extremely dramatic and beautiful work that begins with a funeral march that is the very essence of despair and finally closes with a moving finale that mobilizes the chorus on a large scale, so perhaps the decision was made to make it appropriate for such a monumental event. This was probably the reason for the decision that the piece was appropriate for such a monumental event. In fact, Haitink performed this work at the 50th anniversary concert of the Rotterdam bombing in 1990, which was a great success, as mentioned above, so it is likely that Haitink also chose Mahler's "Resurrection" for this concert.Incidentally, it is interesting to note that Haitink, when performing with the Staatskapelle Dresden, employed as soloists Margiono and Van Ness, who also shared the same lineup with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990 and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1995. In 2002, Haitink succeeded Sinopoli, who had passed away suddenly, as the orchestra's chief conductor, and through the authenticity of the music, which was derived from his dedicated musical approach, one can strongly feel that the quality of this live performance must have been a major factor in the decision to offer the position to Haitink. The show was a great success. King International Inc.
