“Eyewitness to the Siege”: Aronovich Live Recording of the “Leningrad” Symphony with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra A highly anticipated album featuring the “Leningrad” Symphony, conducted by “eyewitness to the siege” Aronovich, is now available. Conductor Aronovich (1932–2002) was born in Leningrad. Even before the Nazi siege—the direct catalyst for the composition of this work—began, he was still a child when he was forced to flee his hometown. The train carrying him and other evacuees was bombed about 100 kilometers outside Leningrad; of the thousands of passengers, only about 70 survived. After narrowly escaping death, he walked for two months to return to Leningrad, which was in the midst of the siege. Until the siege was lifted, he courageously threw himself into resistance activities, and in 1943, as an 11-year-old boy—an exceptional case—he was awarded a medal by the state for his contributions to the defense of Leningrad. It was in Leningrad, under siege, that Aronovich first heard this piece. Several years later, while working with the composer on a performance of this piece, he told Shostakovich how deeply the work had moved him during the war. Shostakovich was deeply impressed by this, and whenever the two worked together, he would have the young conductor recount the story again and again. Aronovich quotes the composer’s remarks on this work as follows: “This symphony does not merely celebrate the victory over fascism. At the same time, it celebrates the victory of good over evil, of humanism over anti-Enlightenment thought, and of life over death.” Aronovich, who was personally acquainted with the composer and is known for his BIS recording of Symphony No. 5, is widely recognized—by himself and others—as one of the foremost authorities on Shostakovich. It is hardly surprising that the live performance of *Leningrad* in Stuttgart—which so vividly reflects the composer’s harrowing personal experiences described above—is a performance of rare intensity and passion.
