Schumann: The Ghost Variations and Other Late Works, Performed by the Master Pianist Opitz The third volume in the Schumann collection by the renowned German pianist Opitz. Schumann's piano works possess unique characteristics distinct from the piano writing of major 19th-century Romantic composers like Alkan, Chopin, and Liszt. His music does not fit neatly into the frameworks of Classical sonatas or variations, nor does it fully align with the Romantic-era forms of études, ballades, scherzos, dances, or character pieces. This suggests that Schumann himself was a composer who continually posed creative questions to established compositional principles and musical ideals. The "Ghost Variations (Posthumous)" are known as Schumann's final piano work, composed during the final stage of his mental breakdown. Though linked to his tragic life—written around the time he attempted suicide by throwing himself into the Rhine, using an auditory hallucination heard at night as its theme—it is music of an intensely simple, serene theme and gentle variations, creating an introspective, prayer-like atmosphere.
