A 5-CD set showcasing 20 years of achievements from the “Hohenstaufen Festival,” led by Artistic Director Rachel Rilling, a descendant of Helmut Rilling A captivating collection brimming with a free, intimate atmosphere and high-quality performances The “Hohenstaufen Festival” is a chamber music festival founded in 2006 by violinist Rachel Rilling. It is held every autumn in the small town of Hohenstaufen, near Stuttgart, Germany. Rachel Rilling, who has served as artistic director since the festival’s inception, is the daughter of the renowned Bach conductor Helmut Rilling, who passed away in February 2026. She is a musician who has been deeply influenced by her father since childhood. Sarah Rilling, also a daughter of Helmut Rilling, participates in the performances. Starting with Mozart’s “Dissonance” at the beginning of the first disc, what a free and lively performance! This captivating set vividly captures the intimate yet high-quality, special sound emanating from the festival. The program spans a wide range of eras and genres, from Bach to the Viennese Classical period, German Romantic masterpieces, French Impressionism, and modern classics. It also includes jazz numbers and contemporary works, reflecting the spirit of the Hohenstaufen Festival: rather than aiming simply to “preserve tradition,” it seeks to constantly rediscover the sounds and colors of the world and its inhabitants, unbound by categories such as old versus new music or serious versus light music. Helmut Rilling, who has made a tremendous contribution to the festival, states: “Music must never be facile. Music must stir people, touch them personally, and give them cause for thought. If the works gathered here can fulfill that role, that will be the greatest gift of all for the festival.” HAENSSLER
