The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra spent a quarter of a century to complete this feat. The complete Haydn symphony recordings are finally released in a box! The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra's recording of Haydn's complete symphonies is finally released in a 36-CD box set. Haydn's symphonies are of an unprecedented scale and quality, spanning more than 100 works. The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra began recording in 1999 under the direction of the prodigious Thomas Fai. Pye conducted more than half of these recordings, 61 symphonies and concerto symphonies (23 CDs worth of recordings), and was highly praised for his clear orchestration and high quality performances. However, the recording was put on hold in 2014 when Fai fell at home and was seriously injured. The dream of recording the complete works was halfway fulfilled, and Fai has not been able to conduct on this recording since then. Since 2016, the orchestra's concertmaster, Benjamin Spillner, has led the orchestra in the release of eight symphonies (recorded on two and a half CDs). Johannes Klumpp, who will take over as Music Director for the 2020/2021 season, will conduct 39 symphonies (11 CDs worth of recordings) to complete the complete cycle. The recording of Haydn's complete works, which has been passed down through Fai, Spillner, and Klumpp, is full of the energetic humor that is characteristic of this group, from the delicate undertones of Haydn's reverence to the sometimes rough and ready approach. The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra's Haydn is full of power, freshness, wildness, humor, and rich surprises, and I am very pleased that this recording of the complete works has finally been completed. Performing with this orchestra has been a journey of happiness. It is a perfect fit for the world of Joseph Haydn's symphonies, which are linked not only to technical perfection, but also to a love of music and a will to create something special, in order to reach an ideal.
