A revival of the 1982 masterful performance by the Essen Volkswang Chamber Orchestra, led by Knyusel! Vocal works by Romberg, inspired by Schiller’s poem “The Song of the Bells.” Recorded in 1982, Andreas Ronberg’s (1767–1821) “Song of the Bells,” conducted by Guido Knüsel and performed by the Essen Volkwang Chamber Orchestra, is now available on the Hensler label! Born in Münster, Ronberg was a child prodigy who learned the violin from his father and showcased his skills in concert at the age of just six. In 1790, he joined the Electoral Court Orchestra in Bonn, where he also met Beethoven. He was active not only as a violinist but also as a composer, writing violin concertos, operas, and vocal works. “The Song of the Bell” is one of Friedrich Schiller’s greatest masterpieces. It is said that Schiller was inspired to write this poem after visiting a bell foundry in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, in 1788. Captivated by this poem, Ronberg set it to a beautiful melody and composed the entire work—comprising 424 stanzas—as music for solo voice and orchestra.
