Schaller and the Philharmonia Festiva, who are working toward a complete Bruckner cycle, take on the first draft of the “Romantic” Symphony! Gert Schaller and the Philharmonia Festiva, who are currently releasing recordings of all versions of Bruckner’s symphonies, recorded the 1878/80 version of Symphony No. 4 in 2007, as well as the 1878 “Village Festival Finale” version in 2013; this time, they have taken on the 1874 First Draft. Having completed Symphony No. 3 on New Year’s Eve 1873, Bruckner began work on a new piece on January 2 and completed the First Draft of Symphony No. 4 in 11 months. However, four years later, he rewrote the third movement as the “Hunting Scherzo” and replaced the finale with the “Village Festival.” Furthermore, the version with the revised finale from 1880 forms the basis for the version most commonly performed today. While recordings of the 1874 first draft have become more common in recent years, it gives a very different impression from the final version. Both the harmony and the rhythm are bolder and more complex than in his later, more stylized works; the piece as a whole has a rugged quality that even brings Beethoven to mind. Schaller emphasizes these qualities to highlight the work’s avant-garde nature, making it a truly rewarding listen. In fact, Schaller himself has stated that, among the various versions of Symphony No. 4, this is his personal favorite. Gert Schaller was born in Bamberg in 1965. He began his career as a conductor at the Hanover State Opera in 1993, served as Music Director at the Braunschweig State Opera in 1998, and was General Music Director at the Magdeburg Theater from 2003 to 2006.
