Enlightenment-inspired Telemann works of 1735, moral cantatas and fantasias! Telemann, one of the leading composers of the late Baroque period, was active in Hamburg, northern Germany, from the age of 40 onward, composing for church cantatas every Sunday, recitals several times a year, and a Passion and oratorio once a year. He is also known as a prolific composer, having written some 40 operas during his lifetime, as well as a vast body of other works, ranging from small pieces for instrumental music to works for large ensembles. This album contains four pieces from his "Moral Cantatas," works that were influenced by the "Enlightenment" that was prevalent in Europe at the time, as well as a fantasia composed at the same time. These are wonderful pieces of music that reflect the musical cultivation of the Hamburg bourgeoisie (middle class) of the time and their contemporary concerns for moral improvement and the search for joy in life, convincingly expressed in polyphonic phrases.The group features renowned soprano Bettina Pahn, a renowned soprano of ancient music, along with Joachim Heldt, a well-known lute player on the Hensler label, Juliane Raquet on viola da gamba, and Karsten Rohlf on harpsichord.
