Maslenko was born in Leningrad and studied at the Leningrad Conservatory before moving to Germany in 1991, where he studied with Kim Kashkashian and Nobuko Imai. The first two volumes of this series covering Russian viola music were both well received, and now the long-awaited third volume is here. The first and second volumes of this series featured the rare original Glinka and Shostakovich sonatas, operatic arias by Stravinsky and Rimsky=Korsakov, as well as Shostakovich's preludes and Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" for viola, all with a unique tone and narrative style that made the audience fully enjoy them. The third performance of the evening was by Anton Luhrmann. In the third volume of the series, the viola will enjoy Anton Rubinshtein's secret "Sonata for Viola," "Night," an arrangement of a song by Wieniawski for violin that Maslenko has modified, and "Meditation," a violin piece by Glazunov. The inclusion of a bonus track, "Improvisation," an original work written by a young Shostakovich that has seen the light of day in recent years, is also very welcome.All are impressive for the depth of understanding and persuasiveness of the works, which only a Russian can provide.
